BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS (BFA) IN FILM DIRECTING

The Directing Department runs a directing programme which comprises three main areas of specialization; Fiction, Television production and Documentary filmmaking. The Directing programme offers students a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the process of production from script to screen, focussing on narrative, technique, aesthetics and performance. Directing students work in close collaboration with their counterparts in other areas of specialization such as Art Directing, Sound, Cinematography, Editing and other production designers to incorporate their visions into their various productions.

The Directing Department offers a four-year degree programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree.

In the first year the students do general courses in filmmaking where they are exposed to all the areas of the filmmaking process. The curriculum also requires that students have general understanding of specific subjects through the Liberal Studies programme. Students are required in the first year to produce storyboards utilizing simple narratives.

Second year students work in teams to produce substantial short projects including a five-minute non-dialogue film. They have the opportunity to work with actors in a collaborative environment. The curriculum also requires participation in workshops which examine diverse techniques and working strategies in the various disciplines.

Students begin their specialization in the third year. The directing students are required to team up with those in other disciplines to create short narratives for various exercises in dialogue, directing styles, and camera blocking. They are also given the opportunity to produce a music playback and a one-minute commercial. As part of their BFA obligation directing students are to produce a 10 minute project in this year.

The fourth year directing students go through various seminars and master classes. They collaborate with other students in the various disciplines to produce their final year 30-minute projects guided by experienced faculty. Directors also as part of their thesis portfolio write a long essay.
