Bachelor of Fine Arts in Editing DURATION: Four years (Full Time) START DATES: September each year PROGRAMME SUMMARY The Editing programme offers courses in the history, theory and aesthetics of Editing. It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive study of film history, techniques of Editing in both linear and non-linear technology. Within the four years, students are introduced to the basics of editing in the first two years of the programme with practice on the linear editing systems and the last two years with practice solely on the non-linear editing systems interlaced with adequate theory as a strong base to the understanding of the programme. The students join other students in other general courses in the liberal arts that help broaden their scope and in effect enables them reason more analytically and critically when they work on their film projects in particular, as well as in their scholarly writing in general. Students are also encouraged to work closely with faculty members of the department in various exercises as well as participate in interdisciplinary projects involving other departments of the institute. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME The aims of the Editing programme is not only to produce editors- but editors with good interdisciplinary skills of the various filmmaking departments, which will enable them to work in any role offered them in the industry should their services be needed. Within the two- year specialisation period of the four year-programme, students are expected to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitude of a professionally trained artist who would not only earn a Bachelor Fine Arts degree in Editing, but also more importantly be able to contribute their quota effectively in the Film and Television Industry. TEACHING METHODS The programme is taught by using both theory and practice. The students are taught the theoretical frameworks by which Editing is birthed by knowledge in its history and techniques and later how to translate the techniques in practice. Practice begins from Level 200 to Level 400. FACILITIES When the institute was initially established all students’ work was produced on celluloid. As the years went on Video Technology (linear) was introduced and more recently digital technology (non-linear). In Level 200, work was done using the Super VHS linear editing equipment, but now these students are being introduced to the digital editing technology with basic editing soft wares like PINNACLE and ADOBE PREMIER PRO on PC platforms to enable them grab the understanding of non-linear post-production practices and perfect it as they move on. In Level 300 the specialisation students work with AVID XPRESS also on the PC platform and in Level 400 they work with the FINAL CUT PRO 3 and 4 on Macintosh platforms. Please Note: The software are subject to change should the need arise so to be somewhat abreast with the industry as much as possible. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The General Requirement for entry into the Institute applies. Specific Departmental Requirements are: basic knowledge and skills in computer applications, English Literature and ability to tell stories coherently.
